Cooler weather is right around the corner. If your home uses a heat pump for heating your home it's important to know how to use the control settings to maintain comfort and minimize the impact on your electric bill. Choosing the proper settings and doing required maintenance will help you maximize the benefits of having an air source heat pump.
We recommend you choose the "Heat" or "Cool" setting instead of "Auto" based on the season. In the shoulder month of September where we are having cooler nights but daytime temperatures are still warm enough you want cooling, leaving it set to "Cool" is best. If you run on "Auto" at 70 degrees, instead of letting your house cool off to the low 60's at night, your heat pump will use power to keep your home heated to 70 degrees and then use more power to keep it cool as outside temperatures rise.
For fall maintenance items, remember to clean the filters on your inside units as recommended by your unit's manufacturer. It's also a good time to check the outside unit to make sure it is clear of debris like leaves or grass. Also take the time to inspect windows and doors to make sure caulking and weather stripping is in good repair.
